Whether you always wanted to sword fight or make beautiful calligraphy, there is a place where these arts are studied, and relationships are built. We may not be the best and we may be a little less like the Knights Templar and a little more like the Knights that formerly said “Knee”, but we have fun, learn new things and spend our Sundays creating and leveling up our skills at whatever we choose while trying to lift others up as well. If you ever wanted to try new things and want to join others who won’t judge for not being good at anything in particular besides being ourselves, then you may have found the right group.
Cleaned Up Medieval Sensibilities
We are not re-enactors on the whole. Instead of trying hard to create a realistic Medieval environment, we want to create the feel of a Medieval environment without all the mud, totalitarian dictatorship, and other social behavior that is undesirable. Kindness is the guiding principle over all others.
Sword Fighting
The art of the Sword is probably the most recognizable pursuit. Every Knight Marshal is here to encourage rules that help every single member grow in their skill, not in their “wins”. This shift in focus means that players who emphasize winning over growing will find themselves unwelcome to play the games that help members to grow. It doesn’t matter if the system is a full-contact or 0-contact game; winning is not the goal, it is a by-product of becoming the best we possibly can in all aspects.
Non-Combatant Arts
From Armor making, Blacksmithing, gold-smithing, Calligraphy, Block Making, etc., all Guides whether Knights or those seeking Knighthood, are there to serve, but not be used. They serve as Guides, not vendors or gift fairies. This education is a gift of service, not a craft mall, and if they give you something, the cost is that you are expected to give back of your time, what you have learned, and pass it on. Every apprentice has their own journey. The time that is spent helping people along their journey is the gift that is part of SIMFAS.
Appropriate Clothing:
All participants are required to wear a costume (“garb”) that meets or preferably exceeds minimum requirements as seen below. The intent of this rule is to maintain a non-obtrusive appearance appropriate to a fantasy/medieval setting at our events. Garb is required by members. Members can receive guidance on making garb by the Knights of Fabric Arts. The council reserves the right to make certain areas, functions, gatherings, or the entire event garb required. Proper garb not only benefits the members but also enhances the experience of other members and improves the overall atmosphere of the event.
- DO:
- A tunic, shirt, dress, or vest of crotch length or longer. Bare chest is acceptable if allowed by law and or camp/event rules, but only if the rest of the costume meets or exceeds minimum garb standards. Clarification: Obviously-modern clothing such as sweatpants, pajama pants, modern skirts, etc., is not acceptable.
- Non-obtrusive pants, kilt, skirt, leggings, or similar legware. Bare legs are acceptable.
- Non-obtrusive footwear (moccasins, earth-tone shoes, boots, sandals, etc.). Bare feet are acceptable if allowed by the event rules.
- DONT:
- Forbidden Garments, Patterns/Logos, and Equipment: The intent of this rule is to limit the amount of obviously modern-looking items at the event. It is sometimes possible to wear modern clothing in a way (by modification or concealment for example) that it is not considered forbidden. A member of the event staff will make final decisions on this.
- Forbidden garments include but are not limited to: blue jeans, white shoes, camouflage patterns such as military fatigues, visible T-shirts or other obviously modern clothing, and modern hats.
- Real swords, knives, or weapons of any sort (even in sheaths or cases) may not be worn or carried during combat.
- Weapons, shields, garb, and armor may not have clearly modern logos or prints, nor may be made with fluorescent/neon colors.
- Cleats and spikes are not permitted on the battlefield.
- The event staff reserves the right to allow certain forbidden garments to accommodate special needs, weather conditions, etc. These exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. Players are encouraged to overcome this with proper garb when it is possible.
